AADHAAR is a Hindi word meaning ‘foundation’ or ‘base’. AADHAAR is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government to every individual resident of India. The purpose of the AADHAAR card is to serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhar. Each individual needs to enrol only once. Each Aadhar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. Aadhar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course.
The government recently stated that all foreign nationals would be required to apply for Aadhaar card if they are staying in India for more than 182 days and are required to pay domestic income tax. The government also announced that bank accounts and mobile connections need to be linked to their AADHAAR cards, else their bank accounts could get frozen and the mobile connections could be disconnected. The deadline set by banks and mobile operators is 31st December 2017.
